If you're interested in hearing an excellent interviewer (Nick Kingsbury) interview a stilted nervous speaker have I got the recording for you.

This was a great opportunity to discuss the UK Defence Investor Network the same week we announce the launch of the trilateral official AUKUS DIN thank you Amadeus Capital Partners.

Why care about being a startup / investor in the supply chain for defence and security?

  • Sticky recurring revenue for mature companies
  • Proof points and signals for early stage / deep tech
  • And for those who care: a sense of mission

Topics covered: #investing #geopolitics #defence #security #startups #ethics #dualuse #deeptech #mission #spinouts #nato

Organisations mentioned: Defence and Security Accelerator, Ploughshare, NSSIF, In-Q-Tel, NATO Innovation Fund (NIF), NATO - Defence Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic (DIANA), London Tech Bridge

We reference an article many friends helped me write about the UK's Science Superpower ambitions

Please reach out if:

  • you're an investor interested in dual use
  • you're a startup in the supply chain, or want to be, and you're fundraising
  • you'd like to help me with more practice being recorded for a podcast/video. I'd be grateful for more experience. I'd also welcome the opportunity to be interviewed with my partners in crime for the UKDIN Christopher Magazzeni and also Heather Jo Richman and Jamie Watson who I co-chair the AUKUSDIN with
  • and if you'd like to host a UKDIN or AUKUSDIN meet-up in the margins of a defence / security related event
  • you'd like to contribute to the next article series I am working on about dual use startups: building, operating, scaling, investing, case studies (thanks to everyone who has helped already)

PS corrections: since recording this a few months ago: I believe NATO DIANA now considers applications from companies of all stage when they run their calls and AUKUS pilar two has now been further defined alongside the announcement of our (BMNT's) official role running the AUKUS DIN (thank you to the official chair of that working group, John Ridge)

PPS for any officials skeptical about helping bring private sector money alongside tax payers money in the supply chain consider the exponential rate of cost of technology vs linear growth of government budgets. Working with the private sector in this way is HMG's ambition: see the S&T framework - lets go!
