What does the #Innovation ecosystem look like in the #UK? That's what a group of were wondering while co-located in #Hub8. We went hunting for as much open information as we could find, distributed across a number of websites and government portals. We explored some of the questions that we would like the information to answer. To cut a long story short, we started a community project to collect innovation knowledge and show it in a graph tool.

The innovation graph is a knowledge analysis tool built on open-source as an open project. The project is community-friendly. The data is available for download from the repository. It can be queried from an open data store, and the graph tool is live on the internet.

Welcome to the #Innovation Graph!

Presently, we have the following datasets:

  • UK government-sponsored innovation challenges taken from DASA, NCSC, and UKRI.
  • A map showing the linkage between the various organisations, committees and advisors to UK government departments.
  • The UKRI organogram showing how various roles inter-relate withing UKRI.

We have aspirations to add more data over time: UK startups and University organisations, as well as Technology Transfer Offices are all on the radar.

Investors, startup builders and innovators everywhere want to be able to see ideas build, grow and launch into the market-place with minimal friction so why do we need a map of the various interconnected systems? The reason for doing this is as an experiment - we want to find out the hidden features of the UK Innovation ecosystem. Using the knowledge graph you can easily visualise the investments in quantum technologies and how they inter-relate. The inter-connected graph can help you understand the innovation challenges funded by government and so help understand the broader investment profile.

The software and data sets have been shared on Github. The project has been structured in a community-friendly way, new data contributions are welcome, and an automated deployment pipeline is used to both test data contributions, and deploy to the live system.
